The Fox Island Bridge is a hidden jewel among South Puget Sound dive sites. Rarely do you hear about it, but it is worth a try!

Timing your dive around these currents is critical when diving this site from shore. Entry is easy from the public boat launch parking lot on the south end of the bridge. During the dive, you swim from stanchion to stanchion, so good visibility and/or a compass are advised!

Currents: Old write-ups had the ideal window for diving this site at about 1:45 minutes prior to slack before ebb at the North Tacoma Narrows current station. But stations have changed since some of those early write-ups, so take that with caution. Either a super mild day or accompaniment by boat is advised until we can get an updated advisory.

If you do dive it, you will be rewarded with richly colored bridge columns covered with life. On my last dive at this site I think I spotted almost ten different species of nudibranchs: white-lined dirona, three-lined aeolid, Janolus fuscus, sea lemons, spotted dorid, clown nudibranch, and more!

There's a nearby boat ramp that works for lighter boats.

Maximum depth at the middle of the bridge is about 60 ft. Most of the marine life at this site is bottom dwelling; likely the current here makes other types of life more rare.

Conditions: Go on a mild day! Swim along the jetty to the first bridge pylons when the current allows, then descend.

Marine life: Commonly seen: buffalo sculpin, sculpin, short plumose anemone.

⚠️ Safety & accuracy

Before diving at Fox Island Bridge, always check the site-specific wind/wave forecast, tide/currents, and recent reports (latest: Feb 5, 2024)! Reminder: Winds (even offshore winds) can impact slack time.

Briefings may be out of date or have inaccuracies. Dive within your training and experience. The first time diving a site, join someone familiar with the site and/or start on a mild day.

See our currents, tides, wind, and waves guide for help reading charts and planning current-sensitive dives.

The nearest NOAA or XTide current and tide stations within 25 miles are selected by default when available. NOAA stations show charts here; XTide stations link to Dairiki. Click a pin on the map below to choose another station for current, tide, camera, or buoy data (you may need to zoom in or out).

See an issue? Would you suggest a different default station or depth? Suggest briefing updates.
