Dive planning for Rockaway Beach
Site Briefing
Rockaway Beach is the shore entry to Norrander's Reef, on Bainbridge Island's east side.
A buoy at the entry marks a dive line. The line lies on the bottom and runs out to about 95 ft. Most of the structure and life is in the 40–60 ft range.
Parking and entry are in a small conservancy park. On a clear day, views extend across Blakely Harbor toward Seattle and the Cascades.
Access: Scout the entry area with our 360° Street View .
The entry to the water is via a wooden staircase, then over large, slippery beach rocks. High tide is the easiest time to get in; at low tide the walk over the rocks is long.
Marine life: Commonly seen: nudibranch and shrimp. Regularly reported: sea star, wolf eel, giant pacific octopus, lingcod, kelp greenling, crab, plumose anemone, rockfish, and sculpin.
Conditions: The site faces east, so east winds tend to build chop at the entry. Check the site's wind forecast link before you leave home.
Currents: Best dived on slack before flood. The reef itself provides shelter if current builds.
Hazards: Slippery entry rocks are the primary shore hazard.
⚠️ Before diving at Rockaway Beach, always check the site-specific wind/wave forecast, tide/currents, and recent reports (latest: Jun 29, 2026) !
