visibility was thick with algae in the first 25'. It opened up to 15' by the back side of Norranders Reef. juvenile Wolf eel was in it's normal crack, nudies abounded: 11 species or more! The new to me at Rockaway was the Ancula Sp. I've only seen that one at Point Whitney and Sunnyside before. The rest were ones we tend to see regularly at rockaway.

Life: Nudis galore, striped, leopard, lemon, festive, frosted tip, and longhorn or warty. Also some lovely sea stars that I'd not encountered before, yellow with blue spots. Rockfish as well, painted and kelp greenlings, and a couple sculpins also. Conditions: Buoy is small but visible, it's a grimy white football-sized thing but in good condition. The line off of it is very covered up in sea lettuce but is generally followable. If you miss it head roughly 60 degrees out from the buoy and as you get deeper it gets more visible. The deep line ended about 90 as advertised, light current on the outgoing tide from the South to the North, but after hopping to the other side of the rock pile we felt nothing. Genuinely surprised and very pleased with the macro life here, highly recommend for folks looking for that.

Mild southbound current, but we circled the main reef twice. Lingcod on eggs, Red Irish Lord on eggs, Kelp Greenling on eggs... notice a pattern? :) Also two juvenile Wolfeels in small cracks next to each other - the one is getting pretty big, but is still a beautiful red color, the other is still pretty small. A handful of nudis, including Red Gills, Leopard Dorid, one of the big yellow Dorids (I can never keep them straight), and a beautiful nice sized Pink Tritonia. The main reef is absolutely carpeted with shrimp... more than I have ever seen here. Lots of cool little sea fleas and a few blade shrimp along the line to the reef.

Great conditions today. The algaes are dying off on the bottom and the line is easier to see again. We did two dives out here today. Second dive we scooted around the whole area. So, here's the downlow on scooting time distances: Scooter is the Dive Xtra Blacktip Tech on speed 3 for most of this. From bouy to deep reef is about 6 min (85' deep). From shallow end of Norrander's Reef (40') heading south-maintaining 40'- it is 7 minute scoot to Metridium Wall. From the cinder block on the line at 27' (high tide) heading due north, Warbonnet Rock is about a 1-1.5 minute scoot. From the shallow end of Norrander's Reef, there is another small rock structure about a 30 second scoot due south. Hope this helps someone plan their dive and go discover more of the structure at this great dive site!

Two dives today. The earlier on (splash around 10am) had lower visibility (about 8โ€™) and was a low tide turning to an incoming tide. Nudies werenโ€™t everywhere, but still a descent showing of nudies with a gathering of Dendronotus albus in the feather hydroids on the short rocks in the wide path between sections of the reef. Also we had an octopus amputee: it was a small GPO with 2 arms and 6 nubs instead of arms. Second dive was later in the day with a splash time near 1pm. Visibility had increased with the incoming tide. shallow vis was still poor (5-8โ€™) but as you got past 15โ€™, it opened up to 15โ€™ or more. The reef had a number of nudies still, but not a great showing- about 6-8 species during this dive.

Visibility was the best I've seen in days out here! We are very surprised as to how great it was. The nudibranchs were out in force as well. We had 11 different species of nudies today to show Chris on his first Rockaway dive. The line is well buried by kelp leaves on the bottom and the red algaes that are attached to it. Pay close attention, or you will loose it... There are a few saragassum plants in the 15' range with squid eggs attached to them as well.

Following the line to the reef, there is a very active white-spotted greenling guarding a nest (did not see the nest). visibility ... well, it sucked! had a 25' report from yesterday and found something completely different! Odd currents today as well. We were doing skills at the end of the line to the primary reef... Got pushed around pretty well. It wasn't in the same direction consistently or a turn of a current picking up. It was almost as if a tug or ferry was sitting nearby and changing their engines to thrust the water different directions. It wasn't surge either going back and forth... it was pulling us away from shore, towards the reef- then a few minutes later it'd pull sideways, then a few minutes later away form the reef towards the shore. Hopefully the 25' vis from yesterday comes back quickly.
