Dive report for 6/18/25

Profile Pic
Visibility
A silty 5-10 feet, <5 feet in the shallows (high tide)

The current was light and shifted at the forecasted time but the silt gave the water a yellow tint that made it feel like diving in chicken broth.

I've had that yellow before there. Did it change hues at slack?

No, it was yellow the entire time. I'm planning to go again tomorrow and will post a report.

Visibility
A silty 5-10 feet (high tide)

Like reported yesterday, visibility was not good at the pass today neither. Plus the overcast above did not help. One Lingcod, one Red Irish Lord, few Kelp greenlings. Red rock crabs paired for mating, lots of Three-lined aeolids. At least the westerly wind did not arrive while I was at the Pass. And of course, the sun started to show up after I was leaving the park. While I was getting air at Anacortes Diving, I learned that the is dive shop where you can get air fills! I did not know that. FYI: Yacht Haven Dive Center, 423 Shorett Dr. Relatively close to Roche Harbor.

Visibility
A silty 10-15 feet

Visibility was double what it was on the 17th. The brown silt still created a yellowish tint but I suspect the higher sun angle and clear skies were responsible for the improved visibility. The flood was stronger than expected but the ebb started exactly at the forecasted time and was light.

Visibility
10 feet, 5 feet in the shallows

Report from Jan K: dived the Pass today, it was surge and visibility only ten plus at depth, 5 feet in shallows. Some color is back in places, many more Painted anemones and tunicates. Old tables were closer to actual slack. I went in late, but it was not too bad.

Visibility
A silty 10-15 feet, 5 feet in the shallows (incoming tide)

Visibility mixed, some places better than others. Some surge in the shallows, the odd current behavior I blame (actually I don't have proof) on the recent tsunami :) Or that the high tide was FOUR hours AFTER the predicted slack. Grunt sculpin, Scalyheads, Buffalo sculpin, Kelp greenlings, and the usual gangs of Anemones, sponges and tunicates. Three guys with scooters diving, salmon fishermen on the beach... Parking will become in issue soon as the season just started.

Visibility
A hazy 15-20 feet, 5-10 feet in the shallows

Salmon season opening day complicated parking at Little North Beach. On the bright Side, there is color returning to the site. Couple small Lingcod, two Great sculpins and the usual assortment of anemones, sponges and tunicates. The sun did not break through as promised, so it was kind of gloomier.

Visibility
A hazy 15-20 feet, 5-10 feet in the shallows

There is almost no parking, Labor Day weekend and fishing season. The slack was very short and the eddy at the end of dive was very strong. The colors are coming back slowly, the solid overcast above made it gloomier. Buffalo sculpins, Lingcod, Kelp greenlings, Mosshed warbonnet, Scalyhead sculpins. Unlike two weeks ago, most of the Painted anemones were closed today.

Hoping for sunshine, no luck. But with the marine life improving, I went back to the Pass. Surprise, no fishermen at the Little North Beach. Except one with fishing at the rock right where one can reach the beach. And watching me trying to avoid it. I was on the surface talking to him. Did he reel it in? No, at least not for two minutes. And right closely I found severed head of small Lingcod. The dive itself was nice. The pink Proliferating anemones are now reappearing in the shallows too. Grunt and Scalyhead sculpins, Buffalo sculpin, perch, Kelp greenlings, Sandlance. Mottled stars still healthy.

Visibility
A clear 15-20 feet, 5-10 feet in the shallows

Short slack, visibility turned very hazy after the slack, strong current running east the entire dive. few Lingcod, the male Kelp greenling more approachable today. Nice to see the colors provided by Proliferating anemones. Unfortunately the visibility in the shallows was bad at the end of dive, the sun finally reached the scene and Pacific Sand lance school was swimming through the sun rays. Not many fishermen on beach, I could hear one small boat overhead during the second half of the dive.

Plenty of current, couple Lingcods, Kelp greenlings, small Mosshead inside a bottle, school of Kelp perch. Many Red cucumbers are hiding now for the winter. Mott led stars, one Striped Sun star. In all these years here, today was the first time sea lion actually zoomed around me for a closer look. Visibility not great.

Last dive before they lock the gate for the winter. Not a great one, the current never stopped, dark due to early morning and solid overcast. No colors as the cucumber crawls under rocks and into cracks. Two Sea lions circling around me, but not threatening. The Kelp greenling males are displaying mating colors and mostly ignored me while chasing off rivals. Not good day for photography...:(

Mild current for the pass with slack about 8:25am (xtide prediction 7:40am vs NOAA prediction 8:56am). Quite poor vis though. East side of the bridge is very nice in places. West side is quite drab still, as it has been last couple years.

First dive this year at the Pass. Very mild current during the whole time. Red cucumbers feeding, one Ling, Grunt sculpin, Buffalo sculpin kind of sickly, Kelp greenlings zooming around, some Striped perch. Mottled, Ochre, Blood stars.

Heavy overcast, drizzle made the underwater rather gloomy. No wind, but there was surge at the beach. Red Sea cucumbers spawning. The Ling was in the same spot as yesterday. In spite of being a weekend and having favorable tide/currents, only three of us were diving the Pass.

Day 4 of 4 at the pass. Only 2 divers. Sportier current but still able to get a really long dive. Vis has improved every day and today it was about as good as it gets: 15+ft with lots of ambient light even at 80ft deep on a cloudy day. Lots of things spawning: painted anemones, mottled sea stars, blood stars, orange cucumbers, and possibly also northern feather dusters.

Epic dive at the pass. 😍😍 Teal blue waters, great viz, not much silt as you often see here. The anemone fields east of the bridge were looking fantastic. Pink mouth hydroids, and three lined nudies were all over. Such a fun dive!

It was a nice day at the pass! I took Dillon for his first dive here. There were lots of three lined nudibranchs (Coryphella trilineata) and pink mouth hydroids here today! Super nice colors on the east side of the bridge! Several small wolf-eels were seen near the entrance

Thanks so much again for the great dive! Glad to have passed graduation, even if it was so calm it barely counted as a β€œreal” deception pass dive!

What a difference the sunlight makes. After yesterday's gloom, nice colors were greeting us :) Meeting diving friends was another bonus. The currents were friendly, so another pleasant dive in the Pass. Kelp greenlings, few small Lings.

Fairly clear and mostly sunny. Starting to think about naming the proliferating anemone clumps and finger sponges after 3 days in a row. Two grunt sculpins. Clump of strawberry anemones at 61ft under the bridge I haven’t seen in the last 15 dives or so here, glad they are still around. Not a fan of all the fishing line that wasn’t present 4 weeks ago.
