Dive planning for Possession Point Fingers
Site Briefing
The Possession Point Reef is made of multiple finger-like clay projections on the southern tip of Whidbey Island that cascade down from about 30 feet to well over 130 feet. Rugged clay walls, ledges, and sheer drop-offs make for interesting underwater terrain.
The clay walls are often filled with gunnels and small macro creatures, with the occasional octopus tucked into the crevices. On past dives, the bottom here has been completely covered with a carpet of coonstripe shrimpโscaring just one causes them all to flutter off in a brilliant domino effect.
Conditions & Tidal Strategy:
- Currents & Timing: This site can be subject to dynamic currents. It is best done at slack or mild flood.
- Boat Traffic: The site experiences a moderate to high amount of surface boat traffic; carrying an SMB is highly recommended.
- Visibility: Underwater visibility is frequently affected by freshwater runoff from the nearby Snohomish River.
- Depth & Scope: Because the rocky fingers run very deep, this is an excellent multi-level site for recreational divers on the upper ledges, as well as an ideal location for technical diving profiles on the deeper walls.
Logistics & Access:
- Park Permission: Divers must call South Whidbey Parks and Recreation several days in advance at (360) 678-4519 to request permission to use the lower parking area and arrange to have the access gate unlocked.
